Clontarf to City Centre Cycleway (fronting Fairview Park)
When this matter came before us at the October 2017 City Council meeting I voted against the proposal as did all of my Fianna Fáil colleagues. The vote was 10 against (9 Fianna Fáil with one Independent) and 40 plus in favour of the Chief Executive’s Report recommending the project, (with 2 small amendments) which includes the removal of a traffic lane. This in my view is going to cause huge pressure on motorists trying to travel through the already busy junction where the Malahide Road and Howth Road meet the Clontarf Road.
When this matter previously came before us at the September City Council meeting I voiced my opposition against the proposed cycle route, due in the main, to the fact that there had been a fundamental change introduced in the proposal to that which had gone out to public consultation. I also believe that the removal of this traffic lane will exacerbate an already difficult junction for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike.
We are currently awaiting legal opinion on the manner in which this particular Part 8 process was handled by Dublin City Council. The Chief Executive is expected to circulate the opinion to Councillors before the November City Council meeting.
I will keep you updated on developments in this matter.
