Deirdre Heney welcomes Giro D’Italia to Clontarf on Sunday May 11
“It’s great to see the Giro D’Italia Cycling Race will be passing through Clontarf on Sunday afternoon, 11th May 2014. It’s a long time since Stephen Roche’s famous 1987 victory in this stage race, which is perhaps the most famous Cycle Race after the Tour De France.”
This year three stages are on the island of Ireland with the Sunday stage finishing in Dublin. The Race will come in via Swords, Malahide, Baldoyle, James Larkin Rd, Clontarf, Alfie Byrne Rd, East Wall Road en route to the finishing line at Merrion Square West.
In the Giro the leader always wears a Pink jersey, whereas in the Tour De France it’s a yellow jersey. To celebrate this it is hoped that businesses and householders will PINK the city and put on a welcoming display of PINK to all competitors as well as the international media.
Cllr. Heney said that “the overall winner won’t be known until after Stage 21 on June 1st. We can follow the Race on TV and other media each day after it leaves Ireland. We may not have an Irish Winner this year but let’s enjoy the day on Sunday May 11 and PINK the City for all the competitors.”
